Kenya is a lovely red sable with an outgoing, quirky personality. She has most certainly lived up to her name (see below). She has a strong topline, a sweeping underline, and the long legs of a supermodel, but don’t let that elegance fool you … this girl has substance. She is solid through and through. I’d prefer to see a less stifle to hock on her rear. She moves slightly wide in front when unfit. Her temperament is rather sharp with other dogs so we took care to breed away from that with her litter. She also has a very keen eye.
Kenya is always a people dog and hates to be separated from her family. She is definitely a ‘momma’s girl’ and is very obedient and reliable off lead. Kenya never took to chasing plastic bunnies and has always been easily intimidated by and consequently defensive toward other dogs on the field so we didn’t pursue coursing. She is a very special girl from our April Fool’s Litter.
Kenya was bred to Ch. Iroki Paganini in 2004 (One-Ring Circus litter), producing her one and only puppy Faridaat Soleil du Minuit who is owned by Cathie Hays (Bryn Mynstrel) and Marlene Nixey. Kenya was also bred in 2008 to our part desert-bred smooth Santana Blackbird. Sadly, she developed pyometra a week later and had to be spayed.
Kinyago: Swahili for Joker/Clown or Masquerade
How did Kenya get her name? Kenya’s mom had 6 puppies in the April Fool’s Litter, but sadly puppy #5 was stillborn. He was stuck in the birth canal and after a lengthy time birthing him with help from me, it appeared as though Jenny was still in labour. I feared the last puppy would also be stillborn as quite a bit of time had lapsed. As I sat there watching and waiting I found myself muttering “oh Jenny, can you please let this one be born alive … can ya, cen ya, ken ya …. when my little girl finally arrived, she certainly was alive and squacking at the top of her lungs! After all that I decided her call name would be Kenya (can ya?) therefore she received a Swahili reference to the April Fool’s theme – Kinyago!
